Editing

I’ve worked in publishing for fifteen years, at premier academic imprints and mainstream commercial houses and a fair number of places in between. I started at the University of Chicago Press, where I learned the trade on UCP’s world-class science studies lists. From there I moved to Bloomsbury USA, where I acquired and edited titles in a variety of non-fiction subjects (history, current events, sports, music, and more), including bestsellers, national award winners, and acclaimed debuts. Since 2014, I’ve worked as a freelance editor on proposals and manuscripts-in-progress.

I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with authors who have sparked national conversations, and those with more specialized goals. I’ve worked with climate scientists, true crime authors, business leaders, anthropologists, documentary filmmakers, diplomats, historians, cryptozoologists, emergency physicians, and many others, at lengths ranging from short proposals to quarter-million word manuscripts (and here’s a partial list of my editorial work).

Regardless of the subject or scope, my goal is to understand my client’s work and help them frame that work in a compelling way. My services include line editing, development editing, consulting, and ghostwriting. If you’re interested in working with me to improve a manuscript, article, book proposal, or any other project, drop me a line at ptbeatty at gmail dot com.
